Windows Home Server

Adding more storage for backups

This could not be simpler.

For USB or Firewire drives, simply plug it in.  Windows Home Server will recognize and install the drive.  Open the Windows Home Server Console, and go to the Server Storage tab. You'll see the new drive listed there.  Right click it and select Add.  You'll be prompted as to whether you want to add the new drive as part of the backup storage pool, or if you want to allocate it to backup for the server.

For internal hard drives, shut down the PC and install the drive. Once the computer is restarted, access the Windows Home Server Console and follow the steps above. For internal drives, you are not offered the option to make it available for backing up the server, itself.  For Serial ATA (SATA) drives, you probably won't even have to shut down the computer, as these drives are hot swappable.
